Quando usar “at the beginning” e “in the beginning”?

At the beginning se refere ao começo de alguma coisa – um livro, um filme, uma história, uma viagem, etc. ou um período de tempo – dia, ano, semestre, etc. Observem que at the beginning é geralmente usada com a preposição of:

At the beginning (of) No início (de), no começo (de)

Dad always reads the morning papers at the beginning of the day. O papai sempre lê os jornais matinais no início do dia.

She appears only at the beginning of the movie. Ela aparece só no começo do filme.

I’m going to Calgary at the beginning of next year. Eu vou pra Calgary no início do ano que vem.

There’s no way to know who the murderer is at the beginning of the book. Não tem como saber quem é o assassino no começo do livro.

Também podemos usar at the beginning sem a preposição of, mas sempre estará implícito que estamos falando do início de alguma coisa. Vejam os exemplos:

A – Did he die at the end of the movie? Ele morreu no final do filme?

B – No, at the beginning. Não, no começo.

We can’t get late for the presentation because Jim will sing at the beginning. Nós não podemos chegar atrasados na apresentação porque o Jim vai cantar no início.

In the beginning, por outro lado, é sinônimo de at first e quer dizer “no início”, de maneira geral:
